Inner Sound Meditation: Does Direction Matter?
Introduction
Inner Sound Meditation: Does Direction Matter? It is a question some meditators ask. Should attention rest at the eye centre, or can the Inner Sound seem to arise from the right side of the head, the top, the back, or all around? This post explores that question with a balanced approach, looking at scripture, symbolism, and meditative experience. The deeper aim is not to become fixed on location, but to relax, listen inwardly, and gradually merge with the Sound itself.
Can the Sound first appear to come from one side?
- In experience, the Sound may first appear:
- on one side
- on both sides
- above
- around the head
- This may simply reflect stages in perception.
- It does not necessarily mean that one side is the final or correct place to listen from.
- Early perception may be partial.
- Mature perception may become more like:
- surround sound
- a bubble of Sound
- bathing in the Current
Is Listening to the sound from the right side traditionally favoured ?
- A Radha Soami Satsang Beas publication from July/August 2023, quotes Soami Ji as saying:
“Raise your consciousness and find the opening at the third eye and the current of Shabd (sound) flowing on the right side.”
- The Kirpal Singh tradition also republishes older Nada Yoga / Nad Bind Upanishad material saying the yogi
“should hear the Sound through his right ear.”
Does the Bible suggest that the right side is Spiritually Significant?
Quotes:
John 21:6
“Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.”
- The image of the net cast on the right side is especially striking because it links the right side with abundance.
Matthew 25:33
“And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.”
In Matthew 25, the symbolism is essentially this:
Sheep represent those who are aligned with love, compassion, humility, and service (Spiritual side)
Goats represent those who are more associated with self-will, separation, and lack of compassionate response (Carnal side)
“Sheep symbolize those who respond to God through love and service. Goats symbolize those who remain centred in the self and fail to live that love outwardly.”
Revelation 10:2
“And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,”
The open book is revealed truth.Water in a spiritual sense refers to spiritual cleansing. The left foot on the earth shows that this truth must also stand in the material world.
Do these passages prove that one should listen to the Sound from the right?
- Not necessarily.
- The biblical passages may offer symbolic support, but they do not give a direct technical meditation instruction.
- They suggest that the right side may be associated with:
- receptivity
- favor
- fruitful spiritual response
- But they do not explicitly say:
- listen with the right ear
- localize the Sound on the right
- make the right side a formal meditation method
- So the Bible may provide a poetic hint, rather than a precise practice manual.
What about listening from the top or back of the head?
- This may help some meditators become less fixated on the eye centre.
- It may reduce:
- strain
- visual effort
- over-concentration in the brow
- It may also encourage a sense of:
- spaciousness
- immersion
- surrender into the Sound
- But again, this should not become a rigid doctrine.
- The real aim is not to choose the perfect location, but to merge with the Sound.
What does our teaching say about listening to the Sound?
Quotes
“The Source of the Sound Current lies in the high Spiritual Realms; consequently, it is not heard with physical ears.”
“The Meditator should not be trying to listen by focusing in a particular direction.”
“It can appear in all directions and you should feel as if you are bathing in it.”
- Our teaching is clear that the Sound is not physical.
- Therefore it is not properly heard by:
- the left ear
- the right ear
- or any physical direction
- The meditator is advised:
- not to strain
- not to localize too strongly
- not to listen in a forced directional way
- The deeper aim is to let the Sound become:
- surrounding
- immersive
- omni-directional
- The ideal movement is from location into absorption.
Summary
Final reflection
- Scripture may point toward the right side as the side of blessing.
- Meditation may confirm that certain orientations feel more natural than others.
- But the deepest teaching remains:
- let go
- do not force
- do not over-analyse
- merge with the Sound when it comes
The right side may be a helpful symbol of spiritual fruitfulness, but the true aim is not to hear from a side, it is to dissolve into the Sound itself.
