(i) Abram and Lot Symbology Introduction

In this article on Abram and Lot symbology we introduce Lot who was the nephew of Abram. This story is introduced to continue the theme of CONFLICT which occurs throughout the bible.which is an accurate representation of what is happening inside of us. These stories of conflict are allegorical for an internal struggle within us in the same way as The Bhagavad Gita is an allegory for Hindus. This text follows in outline a talk by Bill Donahue on YouTube which is found in his playlist on Genesis

Abram and Lot Symbology

Abram and Lot hey travelled together but they had little in common.

Lot was the nephew of Abram and was the conflicting part. His desire was to live in Sodom which is the lower mind & it represents the desire of the emotions to rule the ones life

Abram on the other hand represents  the desire to live in the higher consciousness,

Lot the lower consciousness.

(ii) Abram and Lot Symbology Scripture Interpretation

Genesis 13:  5 And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

They had a time of apparent unity, but then there was a time of conflict :

13 : 6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

Co existence between higher and lower cannot happen in meditation, that’s what this verse is saying. So we have to MOVE INSIDE and take no thought in meditation. Our mind will not let us rest in the stillness of spirit so we have a struggle on our hands.

13 : 7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

Cannanites & Perizzites = dwelling in the lower mind

Throughout society on a daily basis there are many  cases where Cain kills Abel for example; murders, suicides, acts of violence happen every day.This is the mind or carnal side, slaying the spirit.

13 : 11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Then LOT journeyed EAST . The right spiritual side consumes the left carnal side. This happens in meditation where we try to go beyond the mind or still it and take no thought. This allows the impulse of spirit to enter us.

13 : 12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

Lot pitched his tent towards Sodom =  Lower sensual aspects, planes of confusion. Plains are low-lying and like valleys are symbolic of lower consciousness, mountains symbolic of higher consciousness like we saw with Mount Ararat In Noah & The Flood .

13: 13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Men of Sodom were wicked = the lower mind is the enemy of God.

So finally Abram and Lot are separated and we can sit in meditation without the turbulence of our lower nature and we can connect with spirit.

13 : 14 And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

= God speaks to you once Lot (our lower self)  leaves us. When we detached from the lower bodies (Lot) our higher consciousness can speak to us.

North = physical,

West = knowledge/intellect,

East = Spirit, : once we give ourselves to God he gives us everything.

South = emotional

13 : 18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

Hebron = community built there

Plane of Mamra = confusion

Alter was built in the place of confusion. So we make a sacrifice in the place of confusion. Our lower nature has to be sacrificed in the place of confusion (the world). So we build an altar; this is INTERNAL, although our home and lives may reflect our spirituality outwardly. This is like an internal alter in our home:

This is ‘in the world’ but not of it which is what the passage is trying to convey. A save spiritual altar in the world that we can reside in spiritually, although the main altar is within us.

Psalms 40 : 6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

It is notanimals that need to be killed, it is within US that sacrifices need to be made. So external sacrificial offerings to God are ‘NOT REQUIRED’

The animal part of inside of us is sacrificed because on the spiritual path we do not go with our animal instinct, we go with the DIVINE instinct that resides within

The burning of the lamb on the cross is ASTROLOGY which represents an inner spiritual journey and has nothing to do with burning animals:

In Genesis chapter 14, Abram gets word that Lot is in trouble. This is symbolic of our lower consciousness ruling us again.

Genesis 14 : Abram gets all of his troops together meaning, our ‘right’ spiritual side governs all the forces it can to stop our lower nature from ruling us.

In this section Abram will overcome the our lower consciousness.

Damascus means’ activity and when it rules it means that the left side of us rule and it can cause a lot of conflict e.g. wars, killing, bad corporate business practises, greed etc.

Where does Abram rescue Lot. Lets look at the verses below:

Genesis 14: 14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

318 = 3 + 1 + 8 = 12 = perfection( so his higher self).Abram takes his higher self into battle with his lower nature.

15. And he(Abram) divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

This means he overcame the left side or the carnal instincts & this is the first victory of the right over the left.

Left hand of Damascus = Left side of brain or lower consciousness.

The King of Sodom went out to meet him. He is your EGO! He is the King of the left side and comes out to try to make a compromise. We have a confrontation with our own ego.

(iii) Biblical Inconsistencies

The next 3 verses show us that there is a deliberate mistake in the bible, with Genesis 14 :16 being incorrect.

Genesis 14 : 12 And they took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

This verse is saying Lot is Abrams nephew.

 Genesis 11 : 27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

This verse is also  saying Lot is Abrams nephew.

Genesis 14 : 16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

This is a mistake as it is saying Lot is Abrams brother. These 3 verses also show us that we are not to take the bible literally.

(iv) Abram and Lot Symbology Conclusion

The overall message from the above verses tell us that

we need to overcome Cain or Lot (lower nature) that dwells within us and stops us from knowing who we really are and our true divinity. We have seen from the above verses that God will not speak to us until Lot has gone. In order to speak with God we need to have conquered our lower consciousness through meditation and detachment from our lower bodies.

In the next article we will discuss the character MELCHIZEDEK
